These lists show all the registers of baptisms, marriages, burials or banns that we hold from Anglican or other churches, or from cemeteries, together with any transcripts of them. They also show the formats in which the records are available: either as images, or as microfiches or microfilms, or - if no copy exists - as original documents.
Where images are available, they are free to view in the Essex Record Office searchroom. To see images of parish registers and wills online, you will need to register and buy a subscription. Subscriptions are available for various periods between 1 day and 1 year:
1 Day (24 hours) - £5.00
1 Week (7 days) - £15.00
1 month (30 days) - £25.00
6 months (182 days) - £50.00
1 year (365 days) - £75.00
Prices include Value Added Tax (VAT) at the current UK rate.
Before you subscribe, please make sure that the records you need are available as images. Most of the records listed on Seax are still available only in their original formats.
To find a parish register, click on the drop-down menu above and scroll to the initial letter of the parish or town you need. Then select the parish and finally the name of the church. There may be several parishes in a town. From the summary results, choose the register for the period you need and click on the ‘view' button. If you have a subscription to Essex Ancestors, and there are images available, you will be able to view them. Please note that these images are not indexed. For further details see the Essex Ancestors User Guide or FAQs.
To find an original will, select ‘New Search' and enter the name of the person who made the will (the testator) and the word ‘will'. Add a date range or a specific year if you wish. Then click on ‘Search'. In your results list, any images are shown by a frames icon at the right-hand side. If you have a subscription to Essex Ancestors, you will be able to view them. Many original wills are not yet available as images: see the Essex Ancestors User Guide or FAQs for details.
