Admin History:
The form of this register was set by the Representation of the People Act, 1918 (7 & 8 Geo. 5, c.64). The Act required absent voters to be recorded in a separate absent voters list, as well as in the main register, but no absent voters list survives. Autumn registers were to come into force on 15 October (qualifying date 15 July), and spring registers on 15 April, but in this case, according to Richard H. Cheffins, Parliamentary constituencies and their registers since 1832 (British Library 1998), p. 15, the subsequent spring register did not come into force until 15 May. The present register would thus have been in force from 15 October 1918 until 14 May 1919.
