Scope and Content:Monumental inscriptions at the parish church of All Saints, Great Braxted. Recorded January 1995.
Includes pen and ink drawing of church by Charles Grigg Tait taken from The Parish Churches of South East Essex, notes on the church, indexes of persons, places in Essex, places out of Essex, occupations and stonemasons, with maps of churchyard and church.
Memorials in the churchyard include those for Thomas Dudley 'mortally wounded by the hand of violence while in the faithful discharge of his duty as game-keeper on the Braxted estate', 1872; various Du Cane family gravestones, 1825-1956 including Revd. Henry Du Cane of The Grove, Witham, 1855, Lieutenant Richard Hale Du Cane, Royal Artillery, 1881, Major General Sir Edmund Frederick Du Cane, Royal Engineers, Knight Commander of the Bath and Chairman of Commissioners of Prisons, 1903, Brigadier General Hubert John Du Cane C.B., M.V.O., Royal Artillery, died 1916; William Webb, died at Sebastopol 'in defence of his country', 1856; Edward Brown 'who lived on a small income accumulated by his own industry as a labourer in this parish', 1849; Harriet Clark, died 1884 stone erected by Lady Du Cane 'in remembrance of long and faithful service'; Reginald Evans Grant 'who contracted malaria at the battle of Damascus & died at Alexandria', 1918; Brigadier William Alexander Gimson M.C., Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Frontier Force and Royal Artillery, 1979; tree in honour of Ben Harvey O.B.E., President of Braxted Garden Club, died 1991
