Interview with Percy William Rainbird, born in Roxwell in 1903; childhood memories of Chelmsford, Trinity Road School, camping in Galleywood; witnessing 40 German planes overflying town in First World War; first job at Crompton's - tool runner, capstan lathe operator - names of foremen; sporting activities; account of working at Hoffmann's from late 1920s to 1970 - promoted to supervisor; departments, details of technical processes and machines, wages, hours, works outings, women's work; varieties of ball and roller bearings produced; bomb damage to Hoffmann's and casualties during Second World War air raid.
